Erik: Vad är ditt allmänna intryck av det här direktivet?
Pekka: Beredningen av det här direktivet har varit ytterst dålig. Pekka: De flesta som diskuterat direktivet tror att det uteslutande rör skivindustrin. Det är bara delvis korrekt. Direktivet omfattar mycket mer. Det gäller allt inspelat ljud, eller med direktivets egna ord i original "Aufzeichnung der Darbietung auf einem Tonträger". Den största massan av inspelat ljud i Europa finns i radioarkiven. Kommissionen har inte gjort någon som helst värdering av direktivets effekt på radioarkiven. Erik: Hur upplever du att europaparlamentarikerna reagerar på din och många andra forskares påståenden?
Pekka: Jag tror att vi har haft mycket fruktbara diskussioner här idag. Det är klart att det finns olika synpunkter, men framför allt är jag glad att vi har lyckats få flera europaparlamentariker att förstå att saken är mer komplicerad är än vad kommissionen säger.
Erik: Hur tror du det går i förstabehandlingen?
Pekka: Jag hoppas att parlamentet kommer att svara negativt på kommissionens förslag. Det finns viktiga synpunkter i förslaget, men det vore bättre att börja om på nytt och göra en ordentlig studie om problematiken kring våra gamla inspelningar.

Erik: What is the main problem with the directive proposal?
Martin: It does not even attempt to achieve what it says its aim is. A quote on that from the explanatory memorandum "the proposal aims to improve the social situation of performers". But what it really does is to redistribute money from living performers to "estates" i.e. dead performers. It also perpetuates the multinational record industries's control over a catalogue of cultural materials, reaching back more than 50 years. This affects innovation, cultural diversity and the digital agenda of access.
Erik: You mentioned something about market failure, I did not understand that, can you explain?
Martin: The protection term is currently harmonised, so there seems to be no need to harmonise differences in the internal market. Further, the impact assessment does not consider the impact of the proposal on the audiovisual sector, particularly regarding broadcasting archives. It relies on data supplied by the record industry. This data has not been open for public scrutiny.
Erik: What are your hopes for the first reading?
Martin: Any sensible policy maker would consider the directive in the context of a wider rethinking of the information society. At this stage rejection is the only rational option.

Erik: What's wrong with this directive proposal?
Rufus: Lots of costs and few benefits. Specifically, the main effect of this proposal is to take money from the average citizen and transfer it directly into the pockets of the shareholders of the four major labels.
Erik: What are your hopes for the first reading?
Rufus: Either rejection or major amending, specifically removal of the extension (or limiting it to life though even that is not great) and changes to make sure it is really performers who get the full benefits of any changes.

Att lova sjukpension till gamla studiomusiker men istället ge pengarna till skivbolagen är oacceptablet.

Vilkas åsikter väger tyngst - de som motsätter sig förslaget - forskarnas, folket, svenska politikerna - eller de som inte motsätter sig förslaget - multinationella storföretag?
Bör detta införas i en demokrati?
Inte i en demokrati nej.
Om storföretagens intressen visar sig väga tyngst så bör EU byta namn till Europeiska Aktiebolaget.

Calandrella, det går lite runt runt i skallen på mig efter en lång dag så jag har inget nytt att bidra med just nu, bara en återlänkning till Lessig's föredrag om hur tung lobby sänker förtroendet för och kvaliten på lagstiftningsarbetet i USA. Alla de där lobbyföretagen är här i Bryssel också. Frågan är om vi kan göra nåt åt det.
Vi ses ju alla som lobbyister eller kunder inte medborgare.
Förhoppningsvis kan vi genom vår kamp visa hur otroligt svårt det är att freda våra medborgerliga fri- och rättigheter. I mitt tredje inlägg för idag har jag funderat kring det faktum att det är på kultursidor och i kulturprogram som en bredare publik får höra om Telekompaketet som behandlas i IMCO (utskottet för inre marknad och industri) och ITRE (utskottet för industrifrågor, forskning och energi). Jag tycker att det är dags att nyhetsredaktionerna ställer frågor till Telia Sonera, Tele 2 och Telenor istället för att misstänkliggöra Bahnhofs vd för att han som de säger funnit ett kryphål i IPRED.
